Hello Faith North Community,
The children very much enjoyed a field trip to the Phoenix Symphony for a holiday concert this morning. Thanks to all of the parents that helped make the trip a safe and happy one for all of the children.
We had a very informative presentation at our Site Council meeting this week on ways to help your children with mathematics at home. A big thank you to Kim Hertzog, Montessori parent and Director of General Studies and PEER for PESD for her work with us. I have copied some of the ideas below. These types of everyday math expand thinking and help create a flexible mathematical mind. I hope you will try a few favorites with your children.
Making the Weekly Grocery List (Organization)
Directions: Have your child create the grocery list. They should organize it in a way that will be user friendly, can easily keep track of how many items are needed, etc.
How Much Do We Need? (Estimation, Computation)
Directions: Involve your child in deciding how much is needed. “How much milk do we need for a week? How many loaves of bread do we need to make “x” number of sandwiches? How much lunch meat do we need if each sandwich takes “x” number of slices?”
Weighing In (Weight, Unit Price, Computation)
Directions: Gather the produce you are purchasing. Have your child estimate the weight of each item. “How much do you think these 6 apples weigh?” Have them weigh the objects and compare the measured amount to the estimate. Use this as an opportunity to discuss weights between weights that result in fractional amounts. Also compare size and quantity to weight (3 apples weigh more than 3 carrots).
NOTE: Estimation is sometimes difficult for students as they have no frame of reference. You might want to weigh one or two of the objects and use that as a benchmark to determine the total. Example: I am buying 6 potatoes and 2 of them weigh one pound so all they will all weigh about 3 pounds because there are three 2s in 6.
Extension: Have your child mentally estimate the total cost based on the cost per pound and explain their reasoning (one pound of potatoes cost $1.29 so three pounds will be about $4.00 because $1.30 + $1.30 and $1.30 are $3.90).
Shape Hunt (Sensorial, Shape Recognition, Decomposition of Shape)
Directions: Have your child provide the name for different 3D shaped containers. Afterwards, have them name the parts that make up that shape (an oatmeal container is a cylinder and is made up of 1 rectangle and 2 circles).
The Final Bill (Estimation, Computation)
Directions: Have your child estimate the total grocery bill. To do this, they may need to keep a running total. Compare the estimated amount to the actual amount.
What Might I Have? (Coin Value, Equivalency, Logic, Reasoning)
Directions: Decide on a monetary amount and have your student tell which dollar/coin combinations you might have that totals that amount. “I have $.32. What might I have?” (3 dimes, 2 pennies; 32 pennies; 1 quarter, 1 nickel, 2 pennies)
Extension: Cut out coupons. Have your child make that amount or have them tell you the amount using coins. “A coupon worth $.40 is 4 dimes or 1 quarter, 1 dime and 1 nickel.”
Extension: Designate both the total amount and the number of coins. “I have $.27 and 3 coins. What do I have?” (1 quarter and 2 pennies)
Money Match (Equivalency)
Materials: One die, coins (10 pennies, 10 nickels, 10 dimes, 6 quarters)
Directions: Decide who will go first. The first player rolls the die and makes that amount using pennies; the second person does the same. The play continues however players must trade their pennies for other coin equivalencies whenever possible. The winner is the first to reach a designated amount
Where is the Best Savings? (Comparing)
Materials: Grocery store ads from different grocery stores
Directions: Provide your child with grocery store ads from different stores. Compare the prices at different stores to determine which is the better buy and why.
What’s for Dinner? (Computation, Organization)
Materials: Grocery section from the paper; dinner menu; designated budget
Directions: Provide your child with the grocery section in order to make up a list of food that will feed the family for a week and meet a budget of “$x”. Have them make a chart to figure out the cost of more than one item. Discuss what happens if the amount is greater than the budget.
Fraction of the Cost (Fractions, Percents)
Materials: Grocery section from the paper listing sales price and regular price
Directions: Give your child the regular price and the sales price of an item. Have them determine the fraction of the cost (if the regular price is $2.50 and the coupon is $.40 and that is close to 1/5 or 20% of the original cost).

Materials: Toy or clothes catalogs
Directions: Pick a spending limit for your child’s wish list. The limit need not be realistic, since this is just a wish list. Provide a catalog or advertising for your child to look through and suggest making a wish list. “Let’s pretend we could get some things from this catalog. What would you get if you had $100 to spend?” Explain that your child can’t go over the spending limit, although it’s OK to spend a little less. Have your record items and prices and keep track of their total. Encourage the use of rounding as a means to make the task more efficient.

More or Less War (Greater than, Less than, Equal to)
Materials: Deck of cards
Directions: Decide who will go first. Each player turns over one card at the same time and compares the amount. They should state, “Which is more or less? How many more? How many less?” The player with the largest card takes the pile.
Today’s Number (Computation)
Directions: Pick a number. “Let’s all try to come up with different ways to make 11. Here’s one way:
8 + 2 + 1 = 11. Can you find a different way?” Have students write as many equations as they can to make that number.
How Many Numbers Can You Make? (Computation, Order of Operations)
Materials: Deck of cards
Directions: Deal out 4 cards to each player. Using all four cards and a choice of any operation(s); make as many different answers as you can in 5 minutes. Example: If the numbers are 4, 8, 9 and 2, what numbers can be made? (4 + 9 + 8 + 2 = 23; 4 + 9 – (8 + 2) = 3; (9 – 8) x (4 – 2) = 2)
Make 100 (Computation, Place Value)
Materials: Cards with numbers 1 - 9
Directions: Each player chooses 6 cards from the deck. Using 4 of the cards make two, 2-digit numbers whose sum is closest to 100. Example: If the numbers are 1, 4, 5, 2, 3 and 3: 53 and 42 is 95 which is 5 away from 100.
Numbers in the Newspaper (Number Recognition)
Materials: Newspapers
Directions: Have your child look for the numbers 1-100 in the newspaper and make a book.
Newspaper Scavenger Hunt
Materials: Newspapers
Directions: Have your child look for different things in the paper such as: a graph; a triangle; a percent sign; something measured in inches, feet or yards; something that comes in 2s, 3s or 4s; a number larger than “x”, etc.
Numbers on a Roundtrip (Number Recognition)
Directions: Have your child make a list of numbers 1 – 50. As they are driving in the car or out and about, have them look for and record where they found each number.
How Long? How Far? (Elapsed Time)
Directions: Tell your child when you need to be at a destination and have them figure out what time they need to start getting ready. “We need to be at the party at 3:30. It will take us 30 minutes to get there. You still need to clean your room, shower and get dressed. What time do we need to leave? What time do you need to start getting ready?”
License Plate Fun (Naming Numbers, Estimation, Computation)
Directions: Have your child read the number on the license plate, excluding any numbers. Example: EA4235 would be “four thousand, three hundred twenty five”. You can compare the amounts on other license plates to the amount on yours using words such as greater than, less than and equal to. You can also estimate the difference between plates using increments of 10, 100, 1,000 or 10,000.
Directions: On a road trip or for a designated distance, keep track of the states found on different license plates. Graph the results.
Directions: Add the numbers on a license plate (EA4235 would be 14) or find different amounts. Example: Can you make a 1 using two different numbers? (Yes, 5 – 4 = 1)
Guess My Number (Logic, Reasoning, Vocabulary)
Directions: Choose a number. Have your child ask questions to find your number. Encourage the use of precise mathematics vocabulary when possible. I am thinking of a number between 0 and 100. Is it greater than 50? No (number is between 0-50). Is it greater than 30? Yes (number is 31-50). Is it even? Yes (number is 32, 34, 36…50). Is it a square number? Yes (answer is 36).
Clean Up, Clean Up (Estimation, Counting)
Directions: Choose something your child can count and put away, such as crayons scattered on a table or toys on the floor. Ask your child to make an estimate the number of items to be picked up. “About how many things are we looking at here? About 10? About 50? Closer to 100 or 1000?” Have your child count each item that they put away. Part way through clean up, give your child a chance to revise the original estimate. “You predicted that there were about 1000 books on the floor. So far, you put away 29, and there are just a few left. Do you still think there are about 1000? Do you want to change your prediction?” If they are counting a large number of objects, have them group them (2s, 5s, 10s) to make counting easier.
What’s Fair? (Division, Fractions)
Directions: Put the food or objects to be shared on a plate so everyone can see it. If there are more than a few items, ask your children to make an estimate. “About how many cherries do you think we have? Let’s count and see.” Have them determine how they would share the items so that it is fair. There are 17 cherries and 3 of us. How many cherries should we give each person?” If there are any extras, discuss what to do with them. If it makes sense to divide the extras into equal parts, you can do this as a way to bring up fractions. No one wants to divide the extra cherry into three equal parts, but you could easily divide other kinds of foods.
Junk Mail? (Counting, Sorting, Data Collection and Analysis)
Directions: Set the stage for the project by sorting today’s mail and talking about junk mail (decide what will count as junk mail). “Let’s sort today’s mail. We’ll put regular mail in one pile, junk mail in another. How much mail do you think we throw out every week without even reading it?” Encourage your children to make some predictions. Every day for a week, have your child help sort the mail into two piles: junk mail and regular mail. After counting the number of pieces in each pile, have them record the date, how much regular mail, how much junk mail, and the day’s total. When they’re done, add the junk mail to the junk mail pile for the week. Have them record their data with a chart, graph, tally, or some other way. Throughout the week, ask questions about the data that has been collected. “Is there more junk mail or regular mail today? How much more? “How much junk mail did we get so far this week? Did we get more junk mail or regular mail so far? How many pieces of mail did we get in all today? How many so far this week? If we get the same amount of junk mail each week, how much will we have in a month? A year? What fraction of the mail is junk mail? Is it more than half?”

Hello Faith North Community,
Campus was rather quiet this week as our middle school students enjoyed 3 days on a Land Lab in the Prescott Pines. In Montessori terms, this is preparing a safe and nurturing environment, consistent with Maria Montessori's vision for adolescent growth. It is a an opportunity to support holistic human development in an outdoor classroom, a natural habitat abundant in opportunities for field study, and an authentic community where teens can develop and test mature social visions for their growth, together and independent of family.
Today was the annual thanksgiving luncheon and wow, what a turn out. Thanks to all of the parents that came to enjoy lunch with your child. The weather was beautiful and made it was a delightful day to sit outside under the Palo Verdes and enjoy each other’s company and a delicious turkey lunch.
The week of November 22nd school will be closed for fall break. School resumes on Monday, November 29th.
Please join us on Wednesday, December 1st for our monthly Site Council/PTA meeting to be held on the Shaw campus. The Site Council will meet at 5:00 in the media center where the Director of General Studies will be discussing the topic of Mathematics. The PTA will be held in the cafeteria and begins at 6:00.
On December 3rd at 10:00, all of our children will be attending “Let It Snow” performed by the Phoenix Symphony. The performance will begin at 10. This is a walking field trip. Children are $1.00 and adults $5.00. We have reserved a limited amount of seats so please check with your child’s teacher if you would like to help chaperone the trip. We will be back to school by 11:30.
Several weeks ago, our middle school students held a carwash in the parking lot to raise funds for a dance. Our first middle school dance will be held on Friday, December 3rd in the multi-use room at North from 7-11. More information on this event will be forthcoming.

The Fall Festival was among the best yet. Perfect weather, lots of friends, delicious food and fun activities for everyone. The middle school students really out did themselves with the Operation Game that required substantial hand eye-coordination as well as the ability to tolerate a little good natured teasing from the kids running the booth. I came away with a nice colorful array of spider rings!
I wish to thank Rebecca Sanchez for her amazing organization of the festival! To Jen Skinner, Shannon Alllsworth, Susan Zbick, Rene Hodge, Karla Roberts, Brenda Loman and Malinda Hurd for being out in front and getting things done. I also wish to thank the other 50 parents that were involved in set up, clean up and running the booths. It would not have been nearly as fun without you. Early estimates were that this great community fund raiser brought in close to $3,500.00!
Please remember that school is closed Thursday, November 11th and Friday, November 12th for Fall Break. School resumes Monday, November 15th. We will have Thanksgiving break the week of November 22-26. School resumes on Monday, November 29th. Please have your children spend time engaged in great literature and some fun family activities. With such great weather trips to the zoo, hiking, and gardening are just a few of the activities to engage in. If you are visiting family, it is a great time for your child to interview and write a non-fiction story about a family member that is engaging.

Wednesday we had a great celebration of our cultural community. We showed our pride in the “Small World Parade” then shared in “A Small World Potluck.” There were some amazing presentations on countries and cultures around the world as well as some beautiful Native American projects by the students and the food was diverse, remarkable and yummy.
This month’s site council meeting will be devoted entirely to a discussion of the future of Faith North as it relates to the two
campuses. Doug Allsworth, Faith North parent and Phoenix Elementary School Board Member will be in attendance to:
* gather our perspective on this important topic
* share any insights he has from the District
Please attend, November 3 at 5pm in the Faith North Main library, prepared with your thoughts, questions, ideas and concerns on the
matter.
Then join us for a PTA meeting in the multi-use room at 6:00. Attendance at these meetings counts towards your volunteer hours too. Pizza and childcare are provided.

Hello Faith North Community,
What a great Game Night we had last Friday. We had a full multi-use room, great food and some tremendous prizes! Our own assistant office manager Teresa Carreon won the 50/50 raffle and treated the staff to some breakfast goodies this week! On Wednesday, October 27th we will be celebrating United Nations Day. This is a day designed to celebrate our diverse cultural community. Your child should choose one that is either prevalent in your family or one that you and your child would like to learn about. With your child, put together a traditional costume or parts of one that they may wear that day for our “Small World Parade.” Then, prepare a food that is also symbolic of the heritage the child represents to bring and share in “A Small World Potluck.” Festivities begin with a parade at 10:45 at North. On the FNM@Shaw campus the Elementary parade will be held at 9:45 and the primary parade at 10:45. Then the potlucks will be enjoyed by the children in their respective classrooms. Parents are welcome!

What a great Game Night we had last Friday. We had a full multi-use room, great food and some tremendous prizes! Our own assistant office manager Teresa Carreon won the 50/50 raffle and treated the staff to some breakfast goodies this week! As I write, our children are having their pictures taken. As you might imagine, our 3 year olds are not quite certain they like that idea! We have resorted to puppetry and any other gimmick we can think of to get a quick smile. Hopefully, you will be pleased with the end results. If not, retakes will be scheduled, the date is pending.
All of us are looking forward to the Spaghetti Dinner and game night scheduled for this evening. Stop by and enjoy some big fun with your children and get to know some other of the great families that make up our community. I would like to take a moment to thank the events committee headed by Rebecca Sanchez for their great planning. Chef Alvin Tamura and parent helpers have prepared spaghetti and salad for thousands!
Wednesday we held our Site Council and PTA meeting. I cannot stress the importance of being a part of these meetings. It shows your children that you are committed to their school and their education. It also allows you to be a part of the decision process in factors that affect our school. Please plan on joining us every month. It will count towards your 10 hours of service. Our next meeting will be held on the Faith North campus on Wednesday, November 3rd. As always, child care and pizza will be provided.
Our goal this year for tax credit donations is a lofty $30,000.00! As of the October 1st we have collected $3,600.00. Please remember that no amount is too small. These donations may be dropped off in the Faith North school office or done on the district website at phxschools.org

A big thank you to our outdoor environment teachers and parents that came to last Saturday's parent work day in the gardens. The gardens look beautiful and are ready for planting after break.
The fundraiser at The Vig was some good social fun with grownups. Many parents gathered on Monday evening for great food and good conversation while raising money for our school. The Vig gave back 15% of the proceeds.
We have another fundraiser this weekend as our community football fans have an opportunity to work at the ASU football game this weekend, taking tickets and directing guests. If you are interested it is not to late to join us. Please call Jen at 602-400-9972. If you cannot make this game we have two more opportunities scheduled 10/30 and 11/13.
The Montessori Math Continuum on Wednesday, September 29th at 6:00 in the multi-use room at Faith North. All parents should attend. This is a wonderful way for you to get an overview of how Montessori children learn math. We look forward to seeing you there.

Hello Faith North Community,
It is hard to believe that we are now in our 8th week of school. All of our classrooms are full and teaching and learning are evident everywhere. There have been many beautiful Great Lessons in the elementary classrooms and a plethora of Grace and Courtesy in the primary. The middle schoolers have had goal setting meetings and are fully immersed in their first of six learning cycles.
This Saturday we will have our first Parent Work Day on both campuses to prepare the garden beds, refinish furniture, do some general campus cleanup and prepare and repair our animal homes. Please join us for a meeting at 8:30 on the North campus and then the work begins at 9:00. Please bring a water bottle, gloves, wheelbarrows, shovels and rakes if you have them. Light refreshments will be served.
Our KORU Fundraiser ends on Tuesday, September 21st. There are some great usable items that are easy on the planet and will make great holiday gifts. If fundraising is not something that you can support, there are many other ways to give. On Saturday, September 25th there is an opportunity to work during an ASU football game. We will work with entertainment company Pro Em to help direct and seat people at the game. Your hourly wage is paid to the school. If you are interested in this opportunity please contact Jennifer Skinner at JenniferS@ABDC-AZ.com. We need at least 10 people. If sports does not do it for you either, there is always that great tax credit donation. Our goal is to raise $30,000.00 this year for field trip support, afterschool classes and to operate our outdoor environments.

Our KORU Fundraiser began this week. This fundraiser is offering socially responsible products that are very cool and useful. Proceeds from this fundraiser will support our outdoor environments. Speaking of outdoor environment, next week, Saturday, September 18th we will be having our parent work day in the garden from 9:00-12:00 on both campuses. Please come, bring gloves, water, wheelbarrows, shovels and rakes as we fix, beautify and prepare the beds and grounds for our children to plant. Both campuses will also be displaying a needs list for the gardens and for the outdoor works, please pluck a petal as you pass and thank you for your continuing support!
Mass vision and hearing screenings have now been held on both of our campuses. If there are concerns with the results from the health staff, you will be contacted.
Parent teacher conferences for our kindergarten through 8th grade students will be held on Thursday, September 16th and Friday, September 17th. You should have already received a communication from your teacher as to the time of your conferences. If not, please contact them. We cannot wait for you to see the great things our children are doing in their classrooms.

This week saw the presentation of A Glimpse into Primary Montessori. A wonderful overview was given to parents of the theory behind the Montessori pedagogy. Developmental levels of the primary child were presented as well as some excellent ideas for Montessori in the home. The areas of the classroom were also introduced and discussed as well as a hands on journey for parents with some of the materials. These parent education nights are a rich and easy way for you to become more acquainted with the curriculum that your child encounters every day. Parent education nights should not be an optional part of your childs education for you or your family. Please plan on attending our next parent education evening to be held on Wednesday, September 29th at 6:00 in the Faith North Multi-use room. Our focus will be the Montessori Math Continuum.
Next week our KORU fundraiser begins. KORU products are earth friendly, sustainable products. There are great items for your home, business or great items for holiday gifts. Look for information that will come home with your child on Tuesday 9/6 and assist them in making this a very successful fundraiser for their school. Money from this fundraiser will continue to support our gardens, animals and outdoor environment teachers Ms. Basulto and Ms. Clark.
There is still space in a few of our afterschool classes. Jewelry making, Taiko Drumming, Mad Science, Twinkle Toes Dance and Chess Club can all accommodate more children. Stop by the school office to sign up!

Our Salad Spectacular was a lot of fun with crafts, a plant walk and lots of yummy salads. Parents had the opportunity to reconnect and meet new members of our community. Thank you for attending and continuing to build a strong and caring bond between staff, students and children.
There was also a great turn-out for the BooHoo Breakfast held on Monday. New primary parents learned about healthy seperation practices and met returning parents to create a mentorship. Thank you to the seasoned parents that shared some great stories!
Next week we look forward to a primary parent education evening, A Glimpse into Primary Montessori. The primary teachers will present each of the areas in the classroom and discuss their importance. They will also give parents a lot of valuable takeaways to help further support the Montessori Method as it relates to the development of the whole child—physical, emotional, social, spiritual and academic. A Silent Journey will be offered and is a powerful way to experience some of the materials your child uses daily.
One of the fun new ways the PTA has decided to fundraise this year is to sell concessions at ASU football games. An hourly wage is then given to our school for our efforts. Please join us for training on Wednesday, September 1st at 5:00 in the Media Center at Faith North for this training. We will be working football games on: 9/20, 10/30 and 11/26. This is a great opportunity for football fans to earn part or all of their 10 hours of volunteer time.
Each classroom has an email parent. These parents are responsible for distributing information from your childs teacher as well as flyers and communication from the school. Please contact your email parent to be added. It is a handy way to keep on top of school happenings.

Hello Faith North Community,
Our 2nd year preschoolers joined us this week and they add a sweet innocence that is so beautiful. They are also some of the hardest workers in the school! They went to work as if they had not even taken the summer off. We will begin our 3 year olds on Monday. We are prepared for the tears with our Boo-Hoo Breakfast reception for parents. The meet and greet will take place in the media center of each campus at 8:30. We will link new parents with returning parents to create a mentoring relationship. Please feel free to join us for a light breakfast and a few sniffs!
We are fortunate to have found and hired Ms. Laurie Clark as the new Outdoor Environment Teacher for the Faith North Main campus. Laurie comes to us with a great deal of experience and the heart of a Montessorian. You will see her in the courtyard beginning August 30th.
We look forward to seeing you this evening at our Salad Spectacular in the multi-use room on the Faith North campus. Come, bring a salad and enjoy old friends and new friends. There will be some fun activities for the children too.

This week we had our first PTA and Site Council Meeting. Both meetings were productive and full of information, but we missed seeing many of your faces. PTA and Site Council are excellent vehicles for staying informed. Please check our school website for the schedule of meetings for the year and mark your calendar for the next meeting on Wednesday, September 1st, pizza is served at the PTA and childcare is provided at both meetings. The job of our PTA is to add to the positive climate at Faith North by supporting and organizing events that help us build community as well as implementing fund raisers to support our outdoor environments and other extracurricular activities. The mission of our Site Council is to support and build the culture of excellence through work that improves instruction and student learning. Kym Guntermann, our garden and outdoor environment teacher at Faith North resigned this week. Kym has created some wonderful memories and grown some beautiful gardens with our children and staff. She will be so missed. Thanks Kym for all of your hard work. Your garden clogs will be hard to fill!

What a blissful return! The children came back so ready to be in school. There has been some great teaching and learning this week! The Great Lessons in the elementary classroom never lose their mystery. Make sure you ask your elementary children about them over the course of the next six weeks. It is so fun see the courtyard alive with activity again too.
Thank you to the families that attended "Back to School Night." It really helped foster a smooth school start. If you are a family who has a child in Ms. Church's class, please join us for a Back to School Night at 5:45 on Tuesday, August 17th. Ms. Church has finished and obtained her AMI Elementary credentials, a tremendous feat. Be sure to congratulate her when you see her next.

Welcome back! The campus has been buzzing with activity as staff returns and begins preparing the environments for the children and engaging learning. I love this time of year. The joy and anticipation of coming together and creating the very best “learning school” that we can for our children and ourselves is invigorating and reaffirms our passion!
I am proud to announce that Faith North once again earned the “Performing Plus” label. This label is determined by how our children perform on the AIMS tests. Overall, we can celebrate our scores. Last year new math standards were implemented and the state saw a decline in math test scores. Our staff will be working to look at areas where our children did well and where there were challenges. I will address our scores at our first Site Council that will be held on Wednesday, August 11th at 5:00 at FNM@Shaw in the Media Center. This meeting will be followed by our PTA meeting in the cafeteria at 6:00.

Back to School Night at FN Main is Thursday, July 29 and FNM@Shaw Monday, August 2nd. Both begin at 5:45.

Dear Montessori Community,
As we close out this school year and plan for the next one, I would like to share changes in staffing.
I can announce that we are losing the following teachers and instructional assistants:
· Mrs. Heather Neiderhauser and her husband Sean Neiderhauser will be leaving the North community for a venture out of state. We wish them the best of luck in their travels.
· Miss Meg Davis who has been the instructional assistant to Ms. Leisla Church will be returning to ASU to work on her master’s degree fulltime.
· Mrs. Faith Lowe, instructional assistant to Miss Whiting will be giving birth in October and will be staying home with baby.
· Mr. Saber Hollenthoner will be relocating to sunny California.
Each of these individuals leaving has brought great value to our children and their colleagues. They will be greatly missed.

Hello Faith North Community,
On Tuesday, May 18th the voters of Arizona chose to pass Proposition 100. With its passage, the District can now move forward with implementing its Contingency Budget approved by the Governing Board on April 8th. While there will still be an estimated 5-7% reduction or loss of funding, the district will move forward with the following:
Maintain the class size ratio at 32:1
Continue to call back staff that was affected by our reduction in force
Continue efforts to maintain salaries at current levels
Keep and fund full day kindergarten as well as preschool
Provide free PEER Club in the A.M. and P.M.
We still face an estimated 80% cut to our soft capital funding. Some of the financial loss is also contributed to a decline in enrollment as well as a decline in Proposition 301 revenues. Through all of this, our district and school remain committed to providing quality instruction while being fiscally responsible.
On Monday we had our annual Brown Bag Concert. Mr. London showcased a lot of musical talent. We heard from the beginning band and strings, advanced band and strings, our 3rd grade recorder students and a vocal performance by our 1st and 2nd graders. We enjoyed peanut butter and jelly along with some great music!
Our middle school students have spent the year working on a rite of passage called The Heroic Journey. Today they presented projects and other maximum learning experiences and memories about life to a Council of Elders. There were some great lessons about courageous and thoughtful living shared and the projects that were created/learned out of personal goal setting were diverse. Sewing projects, skateboarding tricks, the unsupported ladder, cooking, paintballing, learning to horseback ride, archery, ice skating and roller skating were just a few of the new skills presented. This journey requires an amazing amount of thought and work for our adolescents, but supports, expands and enriches their development and is an experience they will remember for a long time.

The 3rd years as well as Ms. Roam’s class headed to the YMCA Camp Surf in Imperial Beach, California to share S'mores around the campfire, eat terrific food, and experience school at the beach. This unique trip provides opportunities to explore beach, wetland, and intertidal communities. It also includes a hike to the Tijuana Estuary, the largest coastal wetland in San Diego County.
On Tuesday evening, Shannon Allsworth presented “Digital Literacy” which showed us how our children are affected by media both positively and negatively and offered 5 things that parents can do to establish guidelines and protect our children. Make rules, be a media critic, discuss safety, set limits and join the fun. It has some great agreements for families to adopt as well as providing an ongoing, online tool for parents to use to preview movies and video games. Shannon will re-present this information in the fall.
We have a big week coming up. We will have our first of three promotion ceremonies as well as our fantastic end of the year event the Talent Show/Basket Raffle/Potluck. Please cook up your favorite traveling dish and come join us at 5:30 to enjoy the incredible talent of the Faith North children. WARNING: This is a colorful, noisy, crowded and rowdy event, come in the spirit of family style fun!
Extra raffle tickets are still available in the Faith North School office and we have some AMAZING baskets...water fun, movie fun, green baskets and even a yoga basket just to name a few.

Hello Faith North Community,
This was a BIG week for our middle school students. The beginning of the week saw them off on their adventure trip to Catalina Island. Here they worked on sustainability, hiked, learned about local marine life and snorkeled the waters around the island in the evening. Fun was the first thing on their agenda and that came in the way of the sciences. Everyone had a great time and they returned kissed by the sun and very tired!
Friday morning they were off again to the “Dare To Dream Tour” presented by the Harris Foundation and Exxon Mobil at UPSP. They listened as Dr. Bernard Harris, the first African American man to walk in space, delivered a motivational program that encourages middle schoolers to find and achieve their potential. At the same time, the goal is to encourage students to attend college and study science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) as a way of fulfilling their dreams.
This week our third years are off for their beach trip to Camp Surf where science and fun will also be found.
Please plan on joining us on Monday evening at 6:00 for an informational meeting presented by Shannon Allsworth, “Common Sense Media.” There will be some great tools for you to guide your children safely through the use of the media.
Lastly, a big thank you to all of the parents and children that have celebrated the teachers this week during “Teacher Appreciation Week.” We have had yummy treats daily along with numerous token of appreciation, the best being the great words and works of our children.

Hello Faith North Community,
I would like to thank all of you for the work and support you have offered our school, staff and students this year. The Faith North Montessori Program did not happen quickly but has been built over time by the hard work of caring parents and staff that believe in and support public Montessori.
In order to create the school we wish for our children, it takes all of us to give a bit of ourselves. This could be time or it could be financial. Every parent who has enrolled a child in this program has been asked to donate 10 work hours to our school every year. These hours may be recorded in the large binder labeled “Volunteer Hours” in each school office. At the “Back to School Night” on Thursday, July 29th at North and Monday, August 2nd at Shaw, the PTA and Site Council will do brief presentations on their functions. You will then be offered the opportunity to sign up for areas in which you feel your time and skills will be the most valuable. Opportunities include roles in the fundraising committee, events committee, homeroom parent, email parent, volunteer coordinator and an outdoor environment committee. Please become involved in our vibrant community and your child’s education. Please join us for our Wednesday, May 5th for our last Site Council/PTA meetings of this year.
This week the Montessori staff presented a continuum of the Montessori Geometry curriculum. As I sat and watched the presentation I was humbled by the work of my colleagues and their attitude of service to the child. I feel fortunate to be among such well trained teachers that truly understand the needs of the learners that they serve and their ability to deliver such amazing instruction. We will be working on two more presentations for next year. These are not to be missed.
We just finished up our talent show tryouts and what a bunch of great talent we have to show you. Talent show rehearsal will be held at 1:00 on Tuesday, May 18th in the multi-use room at North. The basket raffle/talent show/pot luck will be held on Friday, May 21st from 5:30 to ???? Please plan on joining us to celebrate our children.

Hello Faith North Community,
The Silent Auction has just ended and there are many happy winners. Over all, this fundraiser to benefit the 3rd graders Camp Surf trip raised well over $1000.00. Thanks to all of you that contributed items and services—-there were some very creative ones and to those of you that bid on items. A special thank you to Myriam Hernandez who organized and implemented the auction.
After a week and a half of tests, we pulled out the stops and had a blast at the first annual “Eco Fashion Show!” 30 children designed and constructed clothing items from used, recycled items. Many children sported dresses including a bridal gown crafted from plastic bags and a train of aluminum cans. There were hand bags, shoes, purses and hats. The winner, Abigail Bayless-Feldman wore a dress of woven magazine pages at the bodice that blossomed into a skirt made from veggie chip bags. Her necklace made of flip tops from pop cans and her earrings made of flattened bottle caps completed her green look. Abigail will be featured on the front page of May’s Montessori Messenger.
Please remember to attend this week’s parent education evening. The staff will give us an overview of only a part of the Montessori mathematics curriculum, geometry.

Testing week has brought lots of hard work, pride and the satisfaction of a job well done as well as chicken pox and many cases of the flu! We will have two days of test make up for our students that missed any part of their tests on the 20th and 21st.
The Silent Auction to benefit the 3rd years Camp Surf trip has opened. You will find a variety of items and services that you will find delightful. Stop by and take a look and bid. Bidding ends at 3:00 today (Friday 4/16/10)!
The children have planned a fun end of testing event, The Eco Fashion Show. All fashion must be designed from recycled materials, things that have been previously used. All fashions must be original and are designed and constructed at home. Our basketball court will serve as our runway and the show will begin at 1:00. Refreshments will be sold to benefit the upper elementary trip to Camp Surf. The winner of the fashion show will have their picture on the front cover of the may Montessori Messenger. Hello Faith North Community,
I have received many questions about the number of teachers and staff members who will be returning to our school next year due to the state budget crisis. Therefore, I need to share factual information with you regarding the budget status of our district and state.
Please understand that we are preparing two plans in response to the Governor signing two budgets. One plan assumes that the temporary 1-cent sales tax (also known as Proposition 100) passes on May 18, 2010. The other assumes it does not pass.
Please understand that as employees of a public school district in Arizona, we are not allowed to advocate in favor of legislation or against legislation that is before voters. Therefore, I can only provide you factual information and will not advocate for or against Proposition 100.
Should it not pass, the district will reduce our certified teaching staff by as many as 170 teachers and class sizes will be increased, as will happen across all districts in our city and state. That number (170) is for our entire district of 14 schools. This impacts some teachers at Faith North.
Should Proposition 100 pass, we will reduce our staff by 49 classroom teachers (across the district, as a result of declining enrollment) and class sizes will remain at the current ratio.
Please note that last year, we were able to call back all of our teachers who desired to return even though we did have a reduction in force of 59 teachers. Please rest assured that we will work diligently to recall as many employees as possible for next year.

Hello Faith North Community!
I hope everyone is feeling refreshed and renewed from our days off. We really got to enjoy the beauty of spring days in Phoenix!
Many of you perhaps know by now that in response to budget forecasts that our district has had to reduce our work force by 187 employees. Currently, employees are notified based on their years of service or seniority. Faith North has not escaped without incident. We have had to non-renew 10 staff members. Most on our Reduction In Force (RIF) list are those who are in highly specialized positions meaning they are specially credentialed to “fit” certain positions that are considered “hard to fill.” While these people have less seniority, the district must bring them back because of their specialized positions. Our staff remains committed to delivering the very best of themselves no matter what the outcome and are passionate about our mission to bring quality Montessori to the public sector.
I will continue to update you through the Principals Blog, the PTA and Site Council meetings as we receive updates from the district office and the legislature.

Hello Faith North Community!
On Friday, March 19 our district art department celebrated our children's art both visual and musical with a wonderful event called Salon Des Enfants at the Alwan House. There was great art, beautiful music and wonderful weather. The art work is/was for sale and the proceeds go to the artist! Our very own Lyric Kearny won 1st place with a beautiful painting of a flower.
We have a new teacher on staff. Please welcome Anna Clevidence. Anna will step into our Special Education Resource position at Faith North. You may stop and meet Anna. Her classroom is located in the media center at North.
On Sunday Faith North was vandalized. This is the first time in the history of our school that something like this has happened. The vandal emptied the middle school lockers and gained entry to our media center. 3 personal CD players were found missing. From our outdoor environment area, a pair of pruners were taken. Unfortunately, the children saw the aftermath of this event. Please continue to assure your children that our school is a very safe place.
Next week is a short week. Both Wednesday, 3/31 and Thursday, 4/1 are early release days. There will be no school on Friday 4/2 or Monday 4/5.

Hello Faith North Community!
Welcome back. I hope that all of you had a fun and rejuvenating spring break! The rain and sun are evidenced in our beautiful school gardens. The children are very proud of their work and amazed by the changes they are witnessing. A special thank you goes out to Tonie Basulto, our gardener at Shaw for assisting the children in the design and implementation of gardening spaces. It truly transforms our outdoors and creates a gentle calm and respect. We have a new chicken at Shaw as well as 3 new bunnies! We are having a coop built for our animal area so that we can add additional hens. It is our hope that egg gathering and animal care becomes a daily responsibility!
This week our elementary and middle school students are completing their bench mark assessments called the Galileo. This gives teachers vital information as they prepare our children for the Arizona Instrument for Measuring Standards or the AIMS test.
On Friday, March 5th, Coach Larson hosted “Jump Rope for Heart.” The children raised over $1200.00 for this cause! We spent the afternoon jumping rope and having a fun time as a school community. The payoff for this hard work was the opportunity to “pie” some willing staff members! The children looked on and cheered as whipped cream pies were delivered with love to the faces of 6 willing adults. Fun was had by all and a great community service was done by our children.
Please plan on joining us for an evening at the ballpark on April 23rd as the Arizona Diamondback play the Phillies, money is due by 3/26. The cost is $8.00 per person.

This week brought a successful and informational parent education event, The Montessori Reading Continuum. The staff worked very hard to compress an enormous, varied and beautiful educational pedagogy with its thousands of lessons and extensions to a one hour snippet of the work a child experiences in our classrooms. We received a lot of positive feedback from the parents and some ideas for additional education opportunities. We will be bringing you The Montessori Math Continuum. Please plan on spending the evening of April 29th learning about our math curriculum. We strongly encourage all parents to attend. Montessori is not just something that happens to a child at school, but must should be nurtured in the home also.
The 4th graders had a great time at the Symphony and were entertained in a 45 minute performance with songs from Arizona.
Tonight is Date Night on the Faith North campus. You may bring your children from 6:00-9:30 for a fee of $5.00 and enjoy an evening on your own.

This week brought us a fun and interactive evening at Parent Literacy Night where we learned some fun activities to support our children's reading at home. Learning to read well comes with nothing more than practice. Our staff supports a minimum of 30 minutes per evening of reading, being read to or listening to recorded literature while minimizing screen time meaning computer screens, television screens or gaming screens to two hours per week. Turning off the television and tuning into family literature time will greatly increase your child's capacity to read fluently, comprehend what they have read and most importantly, enjoy reading as a hobby or valuable pastime. Please plan to join us for a glimpse of the Montessori Reading curriculum on Thursday, February 25th. The evening will provide lesson presentations, a silent journey as well as a question and answer session with our teaching staff.
Samihan Muppirala gave us a thrill with his move to the regional spelling bee. Sami went 17 of the 25 rounds and was tripped up on the word chimichanga. We are so proud of Sami and are looking forward to next years competition.

Time to clean your closets, garages and cabinets! Bring those extra unwanted items to the Faith North office then come to the “Community Swap” that will be held in the Shaw cafeteria on the stage, Wednesday, March 3rd from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure!

Hello Faith North Community!
The middle schoolers had a splendid time on their land lab trip. Word has it that it that the weather was damp and cold and that the showers were the same, so no one took showers! What a relief to finally get home, warm and clean! Land labs are an independent time away from home enjoying the rugged, beautiful Arizona scenery, building community, working on Heroic Journey projects as well as academics. Thanks to all of the parents that transported our adolescents for this opportunity and to our amazing middle school teacher who goes above and beyond so that our students may experience this time.
The lower elementary children are enjoying a day at the recycling plant that is north of Phoenix. They will learn about all of the aspects of recycling and become a bit more educated on being green at school and at home.
Thursday, some of the elementary classes enjoyed a brief performance of Sleeping Beauty (children’s performance) at the Symphony Hall. Faith North has two children dancing!
Please join us this evening for the Daddy/Daughter Dance to be held in the multi-use room at Faith North from 6-8. The cost is $10.00 per family and includes refreshments. We look forward to seeing you there.

Montessori Vocabulary made clear:
Absorbent Mind:
Dr. Montessori used the term absorbent mind to express a concept of education being a "natural process which develops spontaneously in the human being." The absorbent mind is a "special psychic force at work, helping the little child to develop." This natural power that children possess helps them to absorb and learn from the world around them.
Apparatus (didactic materials, Montessori materials):
Montessori materials are a variety of hands-on lessons that are either manufactured or teacher made. These materials were designed and incorporated into the work with the children by Dr. Montessori, her son Mario, and the original Montessori adherents. Dr. Montessori used materials made by Itard and Seguin, notably the Moveable Alphabet and Command Cards from Itard and the Teen Board and Tens Board from Seguin. Other materials are designed to reveal certain concepts to the child through hands-on, uninterrupted exploration after an introductory lesson from the Montessori teacher..
Cosmic Education:
Dr. Montessori saw the use of the imagination as the key to learning for children ages six to twelve years of age. Montessori urged us to give the child "a vision of the universe" because within this view there would be something that would fire each individual child’s imagination and something that would draw the child’s interest. As the child pursues areas of interest, all subjects of learning are touched upon due to the interconnectedness of the cosmos.
Four Planes of Development:
Dr. Montessori saw the human being going through four planes, or stages, of development with each plane having unique characteristics and opportunities for learning. First plane: from birth to six years Second plane: from six to twelve years Third plane: from twelve to eighteen years, and Fourth plane: from eighteen to twenty four years
Freedom & Responsibility:
The idea that freedom follows responsible behavior is an important concept in Montessori philosophy. We give opportunities to "respond with ability" and corresponding freedoms are given. For example, if you remember to bring your coat, then you will be given the freedom to go outside when it is cold.
Going Out:
The idea of going out is very different than the typical field trip that traditional elementary students take. Students in a Montessori elementary classroom will go out in small groups of two to perhaps six students into the community to gather information or experiences in an area of interest. For example, some schools are able to let students walk a few blocks to the city library. Other schools allow students to take public transportation to go to museums or college campuses to visit with experts in their field of study. Others have a system of parent volunteers who drive and chaperone students going out. A going out program is possible due to the child developing freedom and responsibility over a period of many years. Students must earn the right to go out.
Normalization:
The natural or normal state for a human being is characterized by four attributes: 1. A love of work or activity 2. Concentration on an activity 3. Self-discipline 4. Sociability or joyful work The understanding of normalization doesn’t require a leap of faith when you consider those moments you feel most alive and more "you" than any other time. When we do what we love and love doing it because we have the skill and self-discipline to do the activity well, those are the blissful moments of being human... In a Montessori school we are trying to help the child attain a natural or normal developmental process, which is referred to as normalization...
Point of Interest:
As the child is learning new skills, the Montessori teacher will repeat a lesson to emphasize a movement or sensorial experience that will help in acquiring that skill. For example, for the child who forgets to dry his or her hands with a towel, the Montessori teacher may present the hand washing lesson again with a point of interest on the movements and sensation of drying the hands with a towel.
Practical Life:
The prepared environment of the primary classroom contains activities that help the child learn dozens of practical self-care skills such as hand washing, dusting, sweeping, clothes washing, and more. The child around the age of three years is extremely interested in these activities. Doing the work with the practical life materials, the child learns to work independently in the classroom and develops concentration. Practical life activities form the foundation for later work with reading and math materials for the four- and five-year-olds.
Prepared Environment:
We live in a world of prepared environments. Stores, theaters, and restaurants are examples of places that have been prepared to meet the specific needs of the user... The prepared environments in a Montessori school are created to meet the developmental needs of children based on observable behaviors; in many ways it is like a restaurant that is prepared to serve its customers...each Montessori environment is prepared by Montessori-trained people who understand the developmental needs of that age group.

Before the age of six, human beings are in a unique period of learning and development. At this time in our lives, we absorb certain information without conscious effort. Young children learn to walk, talk, and do hundreds of things without formal instruction or being aware of learning. Montessori described these stages as sensitive periods of development, using a term from biologists... There are five basic sensitive periods of development from birth to age six: language, order, refinement of the senses, movement, and social relations. In the older child, these unique learning periods are called psychological characteristics.
Work:
Purposeful activity is called work. Montessori observed that children learn by engaging in purposeful activity of their own choosing. When children can choose what they do, they do not differentiate between work and play.
Work Cycle:
A basic work cycle begins with choosing an activity, doing that activity, returning the activity to order, and then experiencing a sense of satisfaction. That defines one unit or cycle of work. This sense of satisfaction, which may last a few seconds to a few minutes, helps motivate the child (and adult) to choose the next activity, thus creating another cycle of work...the development of a work cycle is an important component in the idea of normalization for the child.

Hello Faith North Community!
You have heard me say that a home/school communication link is vital to a healthy and vibrant school community where transparency is practiced and everyone feels welcome and “in the loop.” It is with this in mind that I will be posting a weekly calendar and a bit of news from our school community along with a calendar of events for the following week.
Last evening we had our school Science Fair. What a fun and interactive way to learn about chemical reactions, heart rates, magnetism solar cooking, static electricity and tornadoes. We had fun with goo, learned about scientific hypothesis and research objectives as well as the general presentation of an experiment. We had some proud children and beautiful projects.
During the science fair, Ms Silvers class was busy selling an amazing variety of baked goodies to science fair goers to help fund the 3rd graders 3 day trip to Camp Surf at Imperial Beach. They were able to raise a whopping $300.00! All of the baked goods were donated by the 3rd grade students.
This evening 2/5/10 will find several of our middle school students at the Jackson Pollack event at Kenilworth School. Following the painting exhibition, the paintings will be auctioned in a silent auction. Auction proceeds will benefit the Phoenix Elementary Art Department.
